I am not sure I understand your last point....Nino,

I am not sure I understand your last point. Are you saying that if things are going well, then we shouldn't make changes? Good teams do that all the time (for example, at the trading deadline). Plus, I don't care how well we are playing, I think you put Grady back into the lineup when he comes back.

Was I understanding this correctly as a "don't mess with a good thing" claim?

Of course, the reason that you put Grady into the lineup is that he is clearly a better than Kearns/Buck.

This leads to the deep question. Who is better Hannahan or Donald?

I was being tactful when I said that Hannahan would hit less than .250. I expect him to hit around .225. Many sabermetric projection having hitting below that.

In my opinion, Donald is clearly a better hitter. But Hannahan could be the better player is he is far superior with the glove? I am going to think about that and do some research.

What are your thoughts?Bryan Belknaphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14913491376020731656noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1284886032850424954.post-5737923262815358692011-04-12T19:05:05.095-07:002011-04-12T19:05:05.095-07:00You have to live with whatever slump is headed tow...You have to live with whatever slump is headed toward Hannahan's way. Does that sound crazy? Yes, it is completely insane, but the way he's playing, you have to keep going.

Let's be honest though.. If he's hitting .250 in the nine-hole, but saving a lot of runs.. Is he really doing that much damage? It isn't so much what Hannahan is doing. it's more so what everyone else is doing. Their productive gives you leeway in regards to playing someone like that.

As for Donald in Akron. I haven't seen him play. I was at just the Opener, so I haven't gotten a chance to see how he looks at third with the Aeros.Nino Collahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12330156038101576668noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1284886032850424954.post-89879480550449908972011-04-12T18:43:04.461-07:002011-04-12T18:43:04.461-07:00Nino,
You are right to stress the importance of d...Nino,

You are right to stress the importance of defense.

I think Hannahan will hit below .250 this year with minimal power. Further, I don't want to suffer through that 3 for 33 slump where we all slowly realize that he is no longer on a hot streak.

I am confident that given a adequate sample size Donald will have better offensive numbers. Nevertheless, I would favor starting Hannahan, if Donald is a significant downgrade defensively.

Donald got injured before I saw much of him in the field (and watching TV is a horrible way to evaluate a player's defense).

What have you seen at Akron so far? I would be very interested to hear updates about Donald's defense.

I don't like using Hannahan's hot bat as a reason to keep starting him. His next at bat might be the first AB in a long slump, and his career numbers indicate a slump is coming. But I could see starting him, if he has a clearly superior glove.Bryan Belknaphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14913491376020731656noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1284886032850424954.post-80921885087570986342011-04-12T14:52:32.795-07:002011-04-12T14:52:32.795-07:00Hoynes is crazy. As you looked at it, there are major differences that conclude to why Hannahan isn't the next Blake. Just different players. Hannahan is better defensively, probably not as bad offensively as he's shown in the past, but nowhere near capable of what Blake has done in his career since arriving in Cleveland.

Your Chisenhall argument is interesting, but let's consider this. Lonnie and Hannahan both didn't play well in the minor leagues last year for the same reason. Injuries. Hannahan admitted he shouldn't have even been playing and Chisenhall didn't look himself. I saw many of his games in Akron in person and he didn't look right.

This is a what have you done for me lately type of a deal. You want someone who can play solid defense and Hannahan does that. So look at what is being done offensively and you can't really unplug Hannahan from the current equation. Lonnie could have done whatever he wanted, he was going to start this season in Columbus no matter what. It's just the way it is. It was up to Hannahan after Donald went down and so far, so good.

You are at a point in the season where it's just tough luck for Jason. I agree about Donald about giving him a shot because you don't learn anything from him playing in the minors. But right now the team is playing well and the defense Hannahan and the others are providing is legitimately helping that pitching staff out. I'd rather have five confident starters than pushing Jason Donald into the lineup, especially when we have Kipnis and Chisenhall, who are the perceived future. I love Donald, don't get me wrong, but his ceiling isn't high enough for me to want to give him a spot over someone who's earning it now and helping out in more ways than one.Nino Collahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12330156038101576668noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1284886032850424954.post-41833388268666817722011-04-11T09:01:21.883-07:002011-04-11T09:01:21.883-07:00Thanks for the mention! Thanks for the mention!David Pintohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12805172700693217895noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1284886032850424954.post-48322714997345606292011-03-15T22:48:32.477-07:002011-03-15T22:48:32.477-07:00Okay the Minutemen aren't from Ohio. Not that he should be a regular with a glove, but playing the field now and then would avoid him being that rusty in interleague play.LargeBillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13231452147187641675noreply@blogger.com
